In South Africa, during the sixties, three women are in love with a very same man, a sentenced to death. Miraculous Weapons tell the story of the last days of a man on death row, Djamal Okoroko (Emil Abessolo Mbo) whose life becomes a set of situations of communication between him and the three women while it is a quest for freedom, at least in its metaphysical aspect. The story get us drawn with Djamal Okoroko into the negritude concept of finding the Miraculous Weapons to free himself from oppression and from the prison. This is about using the oppressor's tools against him like the negritude poets led by Aimé Cesaire did with the French language. In this looking for a savior process, each character represents for Djamal Okoroko one different possibility of being saved. Who will save us is the question Miraculous Weapons is asking to all black people, is it someone that comes form far away like Laurence Neumann (Andrea Larsdotter)? Is it by learning and educating ourselves with knowledge such as the one Stephanie Foucault (Maryne Bertieaux) is providing in her French classes? Or we can only count on ourselves as Lesedi (Xolile Tshabalala), the prisoner's wife? Beautifully shot with nice colors in the landscape of the small community of Vrede (Free State) in South Africa, Miraculous Weapons aesthetics provide large spaces to a "huis-clos" story to match the ambition of the grand theme of love and death... The acting performance of the four actors is impressive and make Miraculous Weapons one master piece coming out of the continent.
